Cartoonist Bios

Get to know the creators from our cartoon collection, “Worth 1000 Words.”

Susan Camilleri Konar is a syndicated cartoonist with King Features. Her freelance cartoons have appeared in publications such as Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, Reader’s Digest, and Chronicle of Higher Education. Susan also produces greeting cards for NobleWorks Inc. and Oatmeal Studios.

Kent Chan-Kusalik is a mixed-race Chinese Canadian who is both trans and non-binary. Born and raised on unceded Coast Salish territories, Kent currently lives in New Westminster. Kent works in mixed media and digital art, drawing from Asian textile patterns and social justice themes.

Justine Crawford is a half-Chinese artist, illustrator, and tattooer born and based in Vancouver, BC. Using a bold, minimalistic, and highly graphical style, she explores themes of diaspora, identity, and emotional growth.

Catherine Martha Holmes is a freelance illustrator and cartoonist living on Vancouver Island, BC.

Paul Kales is a freelance cartoonist, with work appearing internationally in professional and general periodicals. In addition to Asparagus Magazine, his cartoons have appeared in The Wall Street JournalBarron’sHarvard Business ReviewMedical EconomicsReader’s Digest, and more.


Beverley Kort is a Registered Psychologist in private practice, based in Vancouver, BC. She recently decided to venture into the world of art and landed in cartooning. Her lifelong love of comics and humour have finally found an outlet.

Joana Miranda is a NYC-based illustrator and cartoonist. She has created public art for urban displays and museum exhibits, as well as for corporate clients in the US and abroad. Her illustrations, character art, and single-panel cartoons have been published online and in magazines internationally.

Brian Tate is a Victoria-based freelance illustrator, cartoonist, painter, and musician. His work has been called “funny, whimsical, thought-provoking, and culturally inclusive.” Brian creates visual commentary on a variety of topics, and several of his cartoons and illustrations have been published.

Phil Witte is a cartoonist, humour writer, and author. His cartoons have appeared in many publications across the US and UK, such as The Wall Street JournalBarron’sNew StatesmanPrivate Eye, and more.
